Greig City Academy students welcome Bishop Sarah
Ahead of her installation as Bishop of London, Bishop Sarah visited the students and staff of Greig City Academy, as part of her tour of the Edmonton Area.
Accompanied by the Bishop of Edmonton, The Rt Revd Rob Wickham, and the Archdeacon of Hampstead, The Ven John Hawkins, Bishop Sarah was welcomed by students and attended lessons, taking a keen interest in the topics as she joined in the class discussions.
Bishop Sarah also met with the school’s Senior Leadership Team, which included the Governors and School Chaplin, Fr Patrick Henderson, to hear about many of the developments at the Academy, such as students’ recent successes at the British Physics Olympiad and National Schools Basketball Championships.
During her visit Bishop Sarah was quizzed by lower school students and university-bound Year 13s, and spoke of the challenges and opportunities of becoming the first female Bishop of London. Bishop Sarah also met with the Principal, Paul Sutton, and discussed current educational and social issues impacting on secondary schools in London.
The visit closed with Bishop Sarah meeting members of Greig City Academy’s sailing team, whose exploits to complete the Fastnet Race have been followed closely by the school community over the summer. In their 45ft (13.7m) yacht Scaramouche, the students were the only school crew among the 2,700 sailors to have finished the world’s largest offshore sailing race.
Bishop Sarah said after the visit: “It was wonderful to meet both students and staff at Greig City Academy who were inspirational. As part of a wider programme of visits across the Diocese of London they are a great example of how the potential of our young people can flourish with exceptional teachers.”
