St Paul’s Cathedral installs East London vicar as new Prebendary

The Revd Julia Porter-Pryce, Vicar at St Peter, De Beauvoir Town, Hackney, has been installed as Prebendary of St Paul’s Cathedral by the Acting Bishop of London, Bishop Pete Broadbent, in recognition of her valuable ministry in the Diocese of London.

Prebendaries are appointed by the Bishop after consultation with the Dean of St Paul’s in recognition of their work in the Diocese. As part of the roles in the Greater Chapter of St Paul’s, they are each given their own stall in the quire, are invited to preach once a year and are given a portion of the psalms to recite each day. They also play a valuable role in maintaining the Cathedral’s close links with the parishes of the London Diocese.

The Revd Julia Porter-Pryce, who will take up the Prebendal Stall of Islington, has worked and lived in Hackney for over 30 years and has been the vicar of St Peter’s in De Beauvoir Road for fifteen years. Previously, she was a curate in Stoke Newington at St Michael and All Angels, Stoke Newington Common, and Associate Vicar in the Parish of the Isle of Dogs.

Commenting on her installation, Julia said:

“I am delighted to be offered this opportunity to deepen connections between St Paul’s Cathedral and parish churches in the diocese. I am passionate about opening and interpreting churches and faith stories to visitors. I treasure the insights of artists working on the edges of the Church.”

Following the service, Bishop Pete added:

“Julia has served – and continues to serve – the Church of England in Hackney with flair and distinction. She is making a major contribution to our engagement with the Arts. I’m glad to welcome her as a Prebendary of St Paul’s.”
