The Bishop joins Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall in supporting Fulham Palace restoration project

The Bishop has joined Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall at a Tudor themed dinner hosted by Fulham Palace Trust in support of its £3.7m restoration project.  During the evening Her Royal Highness presented the Bishop with the Bishop Compton’s medal in recognition of his support for the Trust.

Fulham Palace is the historic home of the Bishops of London.  For centuries, the Palace and surrounding estate served as a country retreat for the bishops and their families before becoming the bishop’s permanent residence in the early 20th century.   The last bishop moved out in 1973, and the Palace and 13 acre botanical garden are now managed by Fulham Palace Trust, an independent charity dedicated to the ongoing preservation, restoration and interpretation of this historically important site.

Queen Elizabeth I visited Fulham Palace on at least two occasions and dined in the Great Hall. This event saw guests including Sir Timothy and Lady Sainsbury, BBC presenter Sophie Raworth and Fulham Palace Patrons, Friends and supporters enjoy a great feast in the Tudor style in the same hall while being entertained with sixteenth century songs by Scholars from All Saints Parish Choir.

The restoration project will restore the Palace’s Tudor Quadrangle which contains the 15th century Great Hall, create a new orientation gallery and exhibition space; provide room dressing, objects, and interpretation in historic rooms; improve orientation and access; and provide increased opportunities for engagement. Fulham Palace Trust is actively fundraising to raise the match funding needed in order to deliver the restoration project alongside funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
