The Revd Jonathan Brewster, Vicar of Christ Church Highbury, has been installed as a Residentiary Canon with responsibility as Canon Treasurer of St Paul’s Cathedral by the Acting Bishop of London, Bishop Pete Broadbent.

The installation took place during Evensong attended by the Bishops of Edmonton and Stepney together with the Archdeacons of Hackney and London. Members of Highbury Young Singers, Highbury Youth Choir and Eclectic Voices opened the service singing a selection of hymns and songs.

Speaking about his new role, Jonathan Brewster said: “I am greatly looking forward to getting to know the Cathedral community and discovering how, together, we can best serve the people of London and beyond with the mission entrusted to us. In my role as Canon Treasurer I hope to support existing priorities but also to ensure that the building and its contents continue to serve with imagination and fresh vision. Please pray for us, and we will be praying for you as we seek to communicate the love of Christ in this great city.”

Following the service, Acting Bishop of London, Bishop Pete Broadbent, said: ““Jonathan will bring a rich diversity of gifts to his role as Canon Treasurer. I look forward to our partnership.”

Since 2003 Jonathan has been Vicar of Christ Church with St John and St Saviour in Highbury, London. During this time he was been particularly engaged in social work, outreach and schools. He was a driving force behind the repair of the spire stonework at Christ Church and the commissioning of a new parish centre. Jonathan has also served as Area Dean of Islington since 2014 and was Acting Archdeacon of Hackney from 2015 to 2016.

Ordained in 1994 after training at Trinity College, Bristol, he was a curate in Bradford, and between 1998 and 2003 served as Chaplain to the University of Westminster. He lists among his interests interfaith work and social responsibility, and is a keen jazz musician. As Treasurer, he will take the lead on behalf of the Cathedral Chapter in oversight of the building and the commercial and financial aspects of its work, relating these to the Cathedral’s spiritual mission of worship, prayer and service.
