On Wednesday 13th November, Bishop Sarah took part in a discussion on the Assisted Dying Bill with a coalition of leaders from across different faith communities at the New London Synagogue, hosted by the Pathways Interfaith group.

Bishop Sarah was joined by Rabbi Emily Reitsma-Jurman (West London Synagogue), Professor Julian C. Hughes (University of Bristol, and Co-Editor of ‘The Reality of Assisted Dying’), Imam Yunus Dudhwala (Head of Chaplaincy, Bart’s Health), and Rabbi Jeremy Gordon (New London Synagogue).

Throughout the course of the evening, the panel gave thoughtful consideration to the legal, medical, pastoral and ethical questions raised by the Assisted Dying Bill, which is currently in the House of Lords, and the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which will have its second reading in the House of Commons later this month. To consider these questions carefully, Pathways interfaith group, a coalition of Christian, Muslim and Jewish clergy in North Westminster, hosted the panel of leading spiritual voices to share their experiences and reflections.

Bishop Sarah gave her reflections from a Christian ethical perspective, having engaged in parliamentary debates in the House of Lords on the topic, and drawing on her experience as the Chief Nursing Officer for England.
