Bishop Rachel Treweek’s consecration

Rachel Treweek, the former Archdeacon of Hackney, has been consecrated as the Bishop of Gloucester at a service held in Canterbury Cathedral. Rachel becomes the first female Diocesan Bishop in the Church of England and will be the first woman Bishop to sit in the House of Lords

The Bishop of London was serving as the Diocesan Director of Ordinands when Rachel first entered into ministry, and so has supported her since she first started her career in the Diocese of London. The Bishop played a significant role in her consecration while the sermon was read by the Bishop of Stepney. They were also joined by 60 Bishops from across England.

Rachel started her career in the Diocese of London as curate at St George and All Saints, Tufnell Park before becoming Vicar of St. James the Less, Bethnal Green in 1999. She was appointed as Archdeacon of Northolt in 2006 and was made Archdeacon of Hackney in 2011.
